I think the Moore & Kearsley chapter about course design of online courses was interesting. I did not know there were stages when designing an online course. The process was called the Model of the Instructional Systems Design Process which was called ADDIE. I also did not know about the two different models for designing an online course. The two models are the Author-Editor Model and the Course Team Model.
There were several stages in the model of the Instructional Systems Design (I.S.D.) process. The stages include Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation (Moore & Kearsley, 2012). It was interesting that all the stages in the process can be repeated except Evaluation. The main idea of the I.S.D. approach was the development of online instruction could be divided into several stages (Moore & Kearsley, 2012). The cycle is flexible since any part of the process can be repeated to make any necessary improvements.
The two approaches for creating online courses are the Author-Editor Model and the Course Team Model. The Author-Editor model, individual teachers alone or with technical assistance produce content with authoring systems such as Moodle and Blackboard (Moore & Kearsley, 2012). The Course-Team Model each course was designed and produced by a team which can have as many as 20 people (Moore & Kearsley, 2012).
Each approach of creating courses had both advantages and disadvantages. I prefered the Course Team Model. A course team uses several specialists such as web producers, instructional designers, librarians and subject experts. There was a greater wealth of knowledge and experience from a large team which means better quality course materials. A course team had representatives of different technologies and the course included multiple media (Moore & Kearsley, 2012). The disadvantage to using a course team was labor intensive, more expensive and had a longer development period.
